More Discussion

Hello Everybody,
Thanks to everyone who has shared their thoughts so far. Your comments are very insightful. Here are a few more questions to discuss together:

1.  When Max and his family were rounded up in the ghetto and put on trains, they were taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau. What went through your mind as you read what happened to him and his family?
2.  Had you already heard of Auschwitz-Birkenau? Tell me what you already knew about this place.

To students in Targu Lapus:
1. We talked about what happened to the Jews in Reghin. The Jews in Targu Lapus were sent to Dej, where there was also a ghetto. From there, they were also sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Have you ever heard about this?
2.  I am very curious about the differences in the ways WWII and the Holocaust are taught in each of our countries. Students in the US usually learn about these topics in English and History classes in middle school and high school. Tell me more about how you learned or were taught about the Holocaust.

  1. 1. With what happened to Max and his family at Auschwitz was horrifying, Max lost all his family and was alone. That would be unbearable for anyone to go through.

    2. I had learned of Auschwitz before in history class. I knew it was a concentration camp and the largest.

  9. The horrors Max and his family faced are inimaginable. While I was reading the book, I was continuously thinking that how can you survive after seeing your parents and family die? How can someone recover mentally after experiencing those horrific incidents? I can not even imagine this. Additionally, it is beyond my thoughts that humans can be this much hateful, intolerant, and inhumane towards a group of people.

  10. I was worried and saddened, I do not like being separated from my family and reading about what happened to Max and his family made me feel upset and think that nothing like that should ever happen to families again.

I read about Auschwitz-Birkenau in the past and knew that it was one of the worst killing centers that the Nazis had in place. I had never read an actual personal account of it.

  11. Hello!
Honestly, I can not imagine losing my familly. But I can imagine what Max went through in those moments espiacially considering the circumstances. As I was reading the book a lot of thoughts crossed my mind, for instance how could humans be so cruel to their kind or how could they sleep at night?
The history must not be repeated!

  16. 1.When I read these two phrases "the selection " and "My parents and sister marched off to the left , and my brother and I marched to the right" I understand that Max's family is lost forever .But the phrase " my parents were holding my litle sister by the hand .That was last time I saw them ... I never saw my family again " . It is deeply graved in my memory.
    2. In holiday I watched many TV documentaries about the Holocaust , Auschwitz Birkenau , and I remember of the searches of corpses where they found in Jews's clothes the precious metals .

1.I heard a little about it and I'm amazed what happened near me and not only , aproximate 77 years ago.
2.I heard of the Holocaust in secondary school, and I'm reading now from this book.
