Some "Get to Know You" Questions! :)

In addition to starting reading Night, we worked together to come up with a few questions about Targu Lapus and your school.  We are looking forward to your responses! Feel free to ask us any questions you may have.

1.  What is it like in a Romanian classroom?
2.  What are your favorite holidays?
3.  What are some cultural traditions in Romania?
4.  Is learning English part of your school curriculum?
5.  How does it feel to work with other students from the U.S.?
6.  What do teenagers in Targu Lapus do for fun?

  1. Hello! I'm so excited about this collaboration and I'm happy you want to find out so many things about what's like living in Romania, especially in Targu Lapus.
    1. Reffering to classrooms, the first aspect I can highlight is its structure. For example, we start highschool in a certain classroom and we have the same colleagues for 4 years and we have all our courses together.I thought it's important to say that because I knew there is a different system.:)
Usually, being together so much time help us to form a close friendship, we help and protect each other.
    2. Naturally, all holidays are my favourite ones ! But if I really have to choose between them,I'll choose Summer Holiday because is the longest one and it's the only one that helps me to completely disconnect .The sun , the heat , the nature , the outdoor activities , maybe all of these make me say that nothing is more beautiful than a Summer Holiday .
3.Romania is full of traditions and customs, every single region of Romania having its own traditions.I'll start saying something about Winter Holidays as we are waiting impatiently for them to come.On Christmas and New Year’s Eve, children and young men go from house to house singings carols. In some regions, they dance with folk masks on their faces and recite speeches. For their effort, they receive fruit and home-made cakes. The best known carols are Steaua, Plugusorul, Sorcova and Capra.
Boboteaza (January 6) and Sfantul Ioan (January 7) mark the first week of January. It is the moment when Romanians go to the church to take holy water, used for curing and purification. In the riverside villages and towns, young men compete in bringing back to the shore the cross that the priest throws into the frozen waters.
4.Yes, English is included in our curriculum. But there are so many schools around that neglect this subject and when the students come to highschool, they have some problems. I personally think English is very important so as it helps us to communicate and maybe, the fact we learn English will help us in our future careers, offering new opportunities for us.
5.As I've already said, I'm happy I had the chance to be involved in this project and I feel very pleased working with them.
6.We hang out with our friends,we watch movies, we spend time on the Internet - as everybody's doing nowadays. I don't think our leisure activities are very different from yours!

  2. Hi! As I really don't have anything right now to say about me and you (that Gabi hasn't already said), I'll answer a few question from above.
1 It's really good that we have the same colleagues for 4 years because I'm really bad at remembering names and this way I can know them better.
2 Christmas when the whole family gets together and I can go with my class carol singing.
3 For answer see Gabriela Mos, since I wholeheartedly agree with her.
4 Yup, English is in our curriculum but it's true that other schools dont't teach it.
    5 One word: Good.
6 It varies from hanging out with friends to staying home and watching movies.

  4. Hi, my name is Alex and i will try my best to answer these questions
    1. Here, in each class there are about 25-28 students, each class having its own classroom, so teachers have to walk fom class to class each hour, but from time to time students have to go in special clasrooms such as the computer lab, chemestry lab or so on.
    2. Personally, my favourite holliday is the summer holliday, the reason being rather obviuous
    3. Besides what Gabi pointed out, another tradition would be knocking Easter eggs (which here are traditionally painted in red). The tradition goes like this: 2 persons, each having an egg (boiled of course), one holds his and the other one hits the egg with his egg and the egg that breaks loses.
    4. Yes, learning English is part of the school curriculum, but some don't really take it seriously, which is quite bad.
    5. Working with students from U.S. feels like a really good oportunity to find new things, get some questions answered and even make new friends, which can only be nice.
    6. Referring to ways that we have fun together as groups, we like to hang out, watch movies together as i guess all teenagers these days do.

  5. Hi, everyone! I'll try to answer these questions as well as I can.
    1. My colleagues already told you everything, so I can't really add something new about what is it like in a Romanian classroom.
    2. The favourite holiday is usually the longest one, but I can't say wheter I like more the Summer holiday or the Christmas one, because of course, in the Summer you have so much time to do a lot of things, except skiing, which is one of the main reasons I love the Christmas holiday. But, if I really have to choose one, it will be the Summer holiday.
    3. I can't think of a different tradition, but for sure, my favourite one is going from house to house with my friends, singing carols on Christmas, because it really connects you to the Christmas spirit and it gives you a special feeling.
    4. Yes, English is part of the school curriculum.
    5. It looks like a good oportunity to work with students from a foreign country, because you have the possibility of making new friends.
    6. We are normal teenagers as you are, we do normal things like hanging out with our friends, play football, playing computer games, stuff like that.

  6. Hey! I'd also like to answer some of these questions.
    2. My favorite holiday is definitely the Christmas one because I'm full of Christmas spirit: I love the Christmas lights, the movies about Christmas, the carols, the presents and all that atmosphere. I wish this holiday was longer...
    5. Working with other students from the U.S. is the best way to evolve our communication skills, learn about their life and maybe make new friends.
    6. Honestly, we don't have many options in Targu Lapus, but we spend time on the Internet, hang out with friends, watch a lot of movies and TV series and also read.

  7. Hi! I am very excited about answering these questions so I will try to do my best.
    2. My favorite holiday is Christmas, because I love the chilly wheather, the snow, the Christmas traditions, decorating the Christmas tree, spending time with family and last but not least, the presents.
    4. Yes, English is a subject that is included in our school curriculum. Actually it is part of it from primary school to the last year of highschool.
    6. Since it is not a very big town, Targu Lăpuș doesn't have a numerous rage of interesting activities to offer. We usually play football on the stadium and we are playing computer games.
